Learning Patterns

"Learning Patterns" is a free app that helps kids learn how to memorize sequences of shapes and develop critical thinking and reasoning skills. It helps students recognize and complete patterns. It has a very easy interface that is even easy for a toddler to use. This app uses two modes for learnig patterns. In total, it uses 8 different patterns and has 3 levels of difficulty for each pattern.

How it works: In the first mode, you decide the types of objects you want to use to recoginze patterns such as numbers, letters, and images. It will start with the most basic patterns and automatically increase the difficulty based on user skills. The second mode allows you to zero in on specific patterns and lets students master that pattern with a huge variety of different images.

Cyberchase 3D Builder

Cyberchase 3D Builder is an interactive app recommended for children ages 6-9. It is a 3D puzzle game featuring Buzz and Delete from Cyberchase. It costs $1.99 on ITunes but was featured for freefrom PBS kids free app packet. Cyberchase 3D builder is based on first and second grade math standards. The math concepts used are geometry, 2D and 3D shapes, matching, and spatial reasoning. Some examples include learning simple shapes, 3D shapes, and how shapes take up space. I plan on using this app to review math concepts of geometry, spatial reasoning and matching shapes. I used this as a reward for the children to encourage learning in my advanced students or students who need more assistance.

Here is how it works:

Children learn what 2D and 3D shapes are and the spatial reasoning. It helps them visualize and manipulate objects in space. There are eight levels to complete in the game. The game has different parts rebuild the neighborhood, construct a building, match the picture, shape challenge, and earn stars. The shapes start simple and then become more complex. Each child can create their own world with the shapes once they accomplish learning the simple shapes. Matching the picture is being able to match up each shape.

Letter Lab

Letter Lab

Are your students struggling to write and recognize their ABCs? Letter Lab will help with that! Letter Lab is specifically designed for apple touch products, included the IPad, IPhone, and IPod. It presents the students with both upper and lowercase letters and provides student with the opportunity to interact with the shapes of the letter. In my classroom, I would use this app when covering the standard ,CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. I would use Letter Lab as a center activity to reinforce the content that had already been taught.

How it works: Letter Lab is creatively designed to let students trace the letters using their finger or a stylus. It also has a real world object associated with each letter. Students trace the letter, and then tap object to hear a voiceover that states the letter and the object. Students can select specific letters to work with using the tab on the side of the screen.
